What the hell are botnets?
“A botnet is comparable with the conscription for the categories of windows” – Stromberg (http://project.honeynet.org/papers/bots/)
Botnets are networks of computers that hackers have infected and grouped under their control to propagate viruses, mail delivery illegal garbage and perform attacks that cause websites to lock.
What does much harm to the botnet is the difficulty in the back to its creators, as well as the growing use of their extortion schemes. As they are used in systems of extortion? Imagine that someone post to pay or see the accident of his Web site. This scenario is beginning to reproduce itself over and over again.
Botnets can be thousands of committed teams. With a large network, botnets can use distributed denial of service (DDoS distributed) as a method to cause havoc and chaos. For example a botnet with only 500 robots can lead to corporate web sites with the knees all teams are combined bandwidth to overwhelm the systems of the company and thus make the website appears online.
Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service on January 19, 2006, Kevin Hogan, managing Executive of Symantec Security Response, in his article “Botnet decreasing in size, more difficult to trace”, Hogan said “extortion schemes have been supported by the muscle of botnets and hackers are also rent out the use of the navies of equipment through advertising on the website for illegal purposes”.
A technique known for combating botnets is a honeypot. Honeypots can help you discover how the attackers poured into systems. A Honeypot is essentially a collection of resources that one intends to be undertaken to investigate how hackers break the system. Machines without patches for Windows 2000 or XP make great honeypot, given the ease with which one can deal with these systems.
A great site to read more about this topic is the project Honeynet (http://project.honeynet.org) that describes the purpose of the site as “to learn the tools, tactics and motives involved in the attacks of the computer and the network and share the lessons learned”.
